Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group embarked on a long-distance tour in support of the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed as a double-album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to feature any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
